News from the Foundation Class

After a long term, experiencing every sort of weather, we are looking forward to a restful holiday.  As usual we have been very busy in our class.

We enjoyed a special "Take your Dad to Nursery" Day, where dads and granddads were able to come and take part in the activities on offer with the children.  The dads took part in our Brain Gym session, added their hopes to our special Hope Tree,  built rockets and enjoyed lunch.  All the dads and granddads enjoyed their visit, though many seemed very tired by the end of the morning!  We hope to offer a similar morning for mums and grandmas in the summer term.

The children had a very busy day participating in the Prep Challenge Day.  The children worked with Year 1 to devise ways of getting the Gingerbread Man across the river unharmed.  The children were very creative with their ideas and built an aeroplane, a bridge, an underwater diver’s suit, a hot air balloon, and a slide!  They had great fun making all the different items, and it certainly helped the children to work through a project in a design and technology manner.

The children also enjoyed dressing up for World Book Day, and looking at the different books that others had brought in.  Disney characters seemed to be popular favourites.

Towards the end of term, the class also enjoyed a day out at Far Ings Nature Reserve at Barton.  Despite a very cold wind, and occasional snow flurries, the children participated wholeheartedly in the pond dipping session - with Miss Grant's group even catching a fish!  After lunch, the children went on a nature walk amongst the woods.

The staff in Olive Carr House have also been busy, with lots of training courses, ranging from Food Hygiene Certificates (congratulations to Miss Smith, Miss Cromer and Miss Grant), courses on the new Early Years Foundation Stage (arriving in September 08), special needs courses, and special courses on Parents and Early Education and Learning(more to come on this next term).

Miss Grant also held a very useful workshop for parents on the Makaton signing communication system that we use.  Many parents are already using this with their children.  If you were unable to attend the workshop, and would like to know more, please see Miss Grant.  Hopefully, we will hold further workshops next term on different aspects of our curriculum.

Have a very good holiday, and we hope to see children and parents refreshed next term.
