Dedication to work is the fountain of learning

 Years 1 and 2

Key stage 1 - Years 1 and 2

In the classroom

Children in Years 1 and 2 are taught by their form teacher, with the addition of some specialist music and swimming teaching. The small classes ensure that children form close and secure relationships, and that they are each able to progress to their potential with plenty of individual attention.

Children in are taught English, Mathematics, Science, French, Humanities, Art and Craft, Music, Computing, P.E. and Swimming.

The basic skills of reading, writing and numeracy are felt to be very important in laying the foundations for future learning. Every child takes home a book to practise, and is given individual time at school.
Spelling and handwriting begin to become more important, and most children develop a joined style of handwriting easily. Children are encouraged to write in a variety of different styles - eg. stories, letters, instructions and reports with the emphasis being on structuring and communicating ideas.

Children are encouraged to become confident in using a variety of strategies in Mathematics, with an emphasis on practical work.

Music and Extra-curricular

Music has an important place in the school, and the youngest children are encouraged to sing in the School Festival and the School drama and numerous musical productions. All children are taught by the Music Specialist, and learn to play the recorder in Year 2. Individual tuition in instruments such as piano and violin is also popular.

The children enjoy a wide variety of clubs, events and visits. Activities range from sports clubs, bird watching, Lego, line-dancing, craft and cookery, to visits to farms, museums and animal sanctuaries.

A Family Atmosphere

Family involvement is important in a young child's education, and teachers maintain close contact with parents. Many parents enjoy coming into school to help with classroom activities.

An important aspect of the Infant classes is the encouragement of values, such as team-spirit, perseverance, kindness, independence. Classes have a happy, family atmosphere where the whole child - intellectually, physically, socially and emotionally - can be nurtured, and where each individual is valued for their own worth
