Science At St. James'

Here at St. James' we follow the National Curriculum Programme of Study in Science with all year groups.

Key Stage 2 Science
KS2 Science is taught in the Preparatory Department by a Junior Mathematics and Science Specialist, with the exception of Year 5 and 6, who are taught by one of the Senior Department Science Specialists in one of the Senior Department Laboratories.
Both Year 5 and Year 6 have 5 lessons of science per week taught in both the Senior Department and the Prep Department they also have 2 x 20 minutes of homework per week.  At the end of Year 6 the pupils are entered for the Key Stage 2 SAT's and then complete some Science Investigation Work which goes towards their Teacher Assessed Level for Key Stage 2.


Key Stage 3 Science
All pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 will follow a General Science Course based on the Hodder Science textbooks.

Year 7
-  Taught in mixed ability groups
-  6 x 35 minute lessons per week
-  2 x 30 minute pieces of homework each week

Year 8
- Taught in sets, according to the marks achieved on their end of year 7 examination
- 6 x 35 minute lessons per week
- 2 x 30 minute pieces of homework each week

Year 9
- Taught in sets, according to the marks achieved on their end of year 8 examination
- 6 x 35 minute lessons per week
- 3 x 30 minute pieces of homework each week.

GCSE Science
The Science Department at St. James' School follow the AQA GCSE Science Suite. 
There is the opportunity for all pupils to achieve either 2 GCSEs over two years in Science (equivalent of the old Double Award). One of the GCSEs will be gained at the end of year 10, whilst the other will be gained at the end of year 11.
Or a pupil may decide to study Separate Sciences for 4 GCSEs, one in each of the three Separate Sciences i.e. Biology, Chemistry and Physics (equivalent of the old Triple Award) and a GCSE in Science.  The GCSE in science will be gained at the end of year 10 whilst the three separate science GCSEs will all be gained at the end of year 11.
