High Quality Day care for children age 2 to 3 years
The Fledglings class is situated in the Olive Carr House, a purpose built Foundation Stage unit set in beautiful leafy surroundings. The Fledglings class benefits from a large well resourced classroom, with an interactive whiteboard, and extensive and secure outdoor play areas.
Children are taught by enthusiastic, hardworking and well trained Early years practitioners (level 3 and 4 practitioners) and benefit from small class sizes with no more than 12 children in the room at any one time. The pupil/staff ratio is 4:1, which allows every child to get the highest quality interaction from staff members.
The Fledglings class team provide a rich and varied learning environment for the children, based around well planned play opportunities. Teaching in the Fledglings class is topic based, as it is in the rest of the Foundation Stage Classes. Topics are chosen based on their ability, so that they engage and inspire children’s learning. The Fledglings Class supervisor and the child’s appointed Key Worker
monitor each child’s individual progress and plan activities according to their individual needs. Each child has an Individual Education plan which sets achievable targets for each term. The Fledglings class provides the opportunity for young children to learn and explore the world around them, but also socialise with their peers and gain independence. Regular contact with parents is maintained, informally on a day to day basis and formally with a twice yearly parents’ meeting and twice yearly reports.
The learning experiences we provide cover the Department for Education and Skills Curriculum for the Early Years Foundation Stage. There are six areas of learning within this curriculum.
Every day the children in the Fledglings class have the opportunity to:
We aim to provide the highest quality education for your child from the very beginning.
Session Times
The Fledglings Class provides a flexible drop off/pick up system between 8.00am and 6.00 pm. Morning sessions run from 8.00am until 1.00pm and Afternoon session run form 1.00pm-6.00pm. However, children can be collected from 3.30pm onwards.
Sessions can be spread out over the week or taken as full days. These sessions run full time throughout the year and are not affected by school holidays.
We have an optional uniform, seen in the photgraph below, which parents can take in many forms. There is a basic jogging suit, which is very popular and fantiastic during potty training. Many parents choose this as an option and then put their children in full uniform as they get close to th
eir third birthday, as the uniform is compulsory in the Foundation.
If you choose to keep your child at St. James' when he/she turns 3 and enters our Pre-School, we ensure that this transition goes as smoothly as possible. During the weeks before the move, the children join the Foundation class (please read more on the Foundation children's web page) for music lessons and other activities to ensure that they are able to gradually get used to the different environment. Usually, they are joining other children with whom they were previously in Fledglings with, so this also makes things easier for them to see the familiar faces.
Our fees are highly competitive, so please contact the School for more information. Of course, the best way in which to decide whether St. James' is the right nursery for your son or daughter, is to come and have a look around. We are more than happy for you to simply arrive (please avoid 11:30 to 12:30 as this is lunchtime) or if you would like to make an appointment, please call the main office on 503260.
A word from a St. James' parent:
"Harry settled so quickly in the Fledglings unit, and soon began to make friends and learn to share and play with the other children... which was surprising for me, as he simply played alone at his previous nursery. He was, and still is now, very happy to go to school and I know that I made the right decision. I found that it was so much more than just a day care facility, he began to learn his colours and number and his speech improved so quickly! I was delighted with how much individual attention he seemed to receive and the emphasis placed on manners, both socially and at the table... something that I feel is very important."
