Meet Mr Murray and his family, St. James’ new Headmaster who joins St. James’ in September 2019
It gives us great pleasure to announce the appointment of our new Headmaster Richard Murray.
Richard, 44, joins St. James’ from Windsor School, The Bahamas, where he was Headmaster of the School until September 2018.
Richard’s teaching career spans over two decades; beginning in state boarding education, it then features long spells at both Rugby and Harrow where Richard held numerous positions, including Head of Statistics, Organisation Master, and Housemaster. Richard’s next move was to Whitgift School, Croydon, where he successfully led the introduction of boarding before his subsequent move out to The Bahamas.
Richard’s commitment to a holistic and broad education is borne out through his involvement in many different areas of school life: rugby, swimming, golf, CCF, and Duke of Edinburgh, where Richard led white-water kayaking expeditions to the Southern French Alps. He is a fanatical golfer, plays Chess, Bridge, and once upon a time performed for HRH Queen Elizabeth II in the Royal Albert Hall. Richard is a passionate chef and is looking forward to involving himself in cookery classes, where he hopes to bring Italian cuisine, along with his wood fired pizza oven, to St. James’.
Richard, having been educated at the University of Leeds, is no stranger to Northern England. Whilst at University, as an Olympic trialist swimmer, he trained with the City of Leeds Swimming Club, competing in events for them throughout the country.
Richard and his family will be living at the School, to ensure that he is able to work closely and support the boarding staff during the weekends. Richard is married to Lowri, a qualified FE teacher and experienced primary school TA, and they have triplet daughters: Eleri, Nia, and Addien, who will join St. James’ in Year 7.
On his appointment Richard said:
“It is a great privilege to be appointed as the next Headmaster of St. James’ School and to be given the opportunity to build upon the excellent progress made in recent years. I am excited about the strength of the community here at St. James’, where pride in the School resonates from everyone I have met. Small, inclusive, and nurturing, St. James’ offers each individual the opportunity to discover the incredible inside them. My daughters are looking forward to becoming St. James’ pupils themselves, we are all eager to join the St. James’ family, and working closely with the school’s excellent staff, I hope to lead St. James’ on a continued upward evolution.”
