Music at St. James' School
Music is at the heart of St. James' School and is a focal point for a great many pupils and students. Each year, a growing number of pupils will take up an instrument, join the orchestra, attend singing lessons or sing in one of the many choirs (Chamber Choir, Girls' Choir and Girls' Academy Choir).
St. James’ School Music Department offers many and diverse opportunities for pupils to pursue a musical education. Music is taught as a subject from Nursery and Reception classes to A-Level.
To supplement this tuition, an experienced team of peripatetic teachers, teach the full range of orchestral instruments on a weekly ½ hour lesson basis.
In addition, pupils are invited to participate in the numerous choirs, orchestras and ensembles and these perform for the public and parents each term.
Irrespective of whether pupils have a musical background, we are privileged to have a musical director on the staff whose exceptional enthusiasm and expertise seems to entice the most diffident pupil into one of the many choirs or the School Orchestra. St. James' is a unique school, as it is the only Choir School in the United Kingdom providing a Cathedral-type choir for a parish church.
The quality of music at St. James' is excellent and provides a wide range of performing experience, both in school and the wider community, for those who participate. The success of the School Orchestra is augmented by the opportunities for pupils, at all ages, to learn to play a variety of instruments. The high level of participation in musical activities enhances educational diversity and confidence and promotes the community spirit which is so prevalent at St. James' School.
Both the Prep School and the Senior School offer a wide range of musical activities, click here to view all activities taking place this week.
