We decided to teach the BTEC first in applied science at St. James' as it gave some of our students the opportunity to explore different aspects of science that were not offered on the National curriculum. For example, it gave our students access to the world of forensic science. They could relate this topic to real life situations such as CSI. There were many opportunities to take part in practical activities and to learn valuable skills throughout the course that would prepare the students for life and work when finishing school. The course also gave them the opportunity to higher education at college.

On 26th January 2010 the Science Centre had their BTEC Science Inspection.
St. James' were given an outstanding review and the Managing, Learning and Resources assessments were all deemed to be "performing to standard" and no recommendations were required.
"The Centre has robust quality systems which are appropriate to the size and range of its BTEC delivery. Policies are in place and known and implemented by staff. Policies are available in the staff handbook and are reviewed annually. The staff have close contact with each other across all levels of seniority - both formally and informally."
"The relative smallness of the School and its staff means that learners are strongly supported academically and pastorally. Staff can informally discuss the learners' needs and progress from the basis of close knowledge of them, as well as in regular formal meetings."
