Reception

High Quality Full time education for children age 4 to 5 years

The Reception class is situated in the Olive Carr House, a purpose built Foundation Stage unit set in beautiful leafy surroundings. It benefits from a large well resourced classroom and extensive and secure outdoor play areas.

Children enter the Reception class in the September of the school year they will reach 5 years of age. Children are taught by Mrs Fillingham, the Head of the Foundation Department. The Reception children benefit from small class sizes and excellent teacher/pupil ratios. The Reception teacher monitors and assesses each child’s progress while planning and catering for each individual child’s learning requirements. We believe that every child is an individual and we plan a broad curriculum of activities, directly linked to the topics and interest of the children in the class, giving them a sense of ownership over their own learning. We set our pupils high standards, in terms of educational and personal goals, these vary according to each child’s developmental stage and personality. We value and celebrate each child’s achievements in all aspects of school life, with a strong emphasis on values and respect for others. Children in the Reception class also have a weekly French lesson, Music and Swimming lessons, allowing the children to access a full and varied learning experience and to develop interests and talents from the earliest age.

The learning experiences we provide cover the Department for Education and Skills Curriculum for the Early Years Foundation Stage. There are six areas of learning within this curriculum:

  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication, language and literacy
  • Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world
  • Physical development
  • Creative development

We aim to provide the highest quality education for your child from the very beginning.
