Yarborough House is the girls’ boarding house for St. James’ School. Yarborough House is named after the Earl and Countess of Yarborough who have a long association with St. James’ School and who own a very large area of land in North-East Lincolnshire.
We strongly believe that the boarders have much to gain from life in Yarborough House. Boarding gives an individual the experience to deal with many social challenges and allows them to learn in the boarding community how to become an individual in the wider world.
Here in Yarborough House, we encourage a family atmosphere with tolerance & respect for others, while encouraging independence and individuality. The camaraderie within the house has produced some lifelong friendships.
Yarborough House is an old building, but in spite of that, it has a very contemporary atmosphere. There is an ongoing maintenance programme to ensure the dormitories are to the standards required by our girls.
We endeavour to keep the number of boarders to each dormitory to a minimum to ensure privacy and space.
Yarborough House has a large shower room, a large wash room and toilets, a small private bathroom, a communal kitchen, a communal living room with digital TV, video & DVD player, and a computer room with internet access for 3 computers. We also have a library in the common room and some board games.
‘Gisby’, which is the Sixth Form building, is open for the sixth form to use until 10pm every evening.
The School aims to provide a caring, family atmosphere within a Christian community. A balanced and broadly based curriculum will promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of each pupil and relate such growth to society at large. It will also prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences, which await them in adult life.
Boarders should value their own self-respect and the good name of the school. Boarders are expected to show consideration for the interests of other members of the house community. They should treat people inside and outside with courtesy and respect.
It is expected that boarders adhere to the house timetable and duty rota.
To achieve a feeling of belonging and to prevent homesickness, it is expected that boarders involve themselves in as many extra-curricular activities as possible.
It is our desire that every member of Yarborough House should achieve their full potential in all areas of school life, academically and socially.
